Thai Embassy

Today we registered at the Thai Embassy. Basically, this took 5 minutes - sign this, sign that, here's this, here's that. Is it important? Absolutely... This step ensures the great country of Thailand that the cute little couple that came to Thailand to adopt that cute little girl still have her months later (or years in our case) - basically, we didn't bring her back and give her to someone else.

Signed, sealed, closed adoption file.

What I didn't expect? Mia's original birth certificate... Wow - that kind of blew me away. I mean, this piece of paper was touched, held, maybe contemplated, by Mia's birthmother. What a wonderful piece of her history to have.

How cute are we???

About 4 years ago, I "met" this great blogger who lived a few minutes from our California family. We met Jessica and Matt face to face 3 years ago while we were California Dreamin' on vacation to visit our family and just loved them as we knew we would. We followed one another's adoption blogs, waited patiently and sometimes, not so patiently, together throughout the entire journey. Chris and I now live about 15 minutes from them in California - dreamin' no more.

How ironic is this? They were registering their son the same day. So while we've both undergone a long adoption process with 2 different timelines, in 2 different states and we had our file transferred from Chicago to Los Angeles which took some time, we end up with the same appointment day. How crazy! So lucky - so we went to lunch in Thai town and enjoyed the bakery, bookstore and grocery together. Here are our 2 beautiful toddlers who just love each other and Pocky sticks. I'm not opposed to long term arrangements... if you know what I mean... My boys think Gavin is pretty cool too and likewise.

Soooo stinking cute!

Happy Gotcha Day Beautiful!

2 years ago we took custody of our tiny Thai Princess.

Here's the link to that post.

Here's the video that will make you smile and possibly cry.

I hope Gotcha Day stays forever engrained in my memory as clear as it was that day. But I blog in case it doesn't. Mia was so scared and so tiny. She loved loved loved her bottle. She wanted all things rice and soup! But mainly that bottle!!! We weren't as scared as we were excited to spend the day with her. We took her to the zoo and all nearly melted from the heat! She let everyone hold her. I remember us not wanting to change her clothes before we left for the zoo in fear of her screaming (we were a little scare) and us not being able to comfort her. She hated her bath. It was just water! She was not a fan! It is the most emotional experience to watch your child grieve for her foster family and love us at the same time. What a brave, strong baby we were entrusted to parent.

Today Mia is a beautiful, typical toddler. She loves noodles and pizza! Her latest favorite movie is Toy Story. She watches it over and over! She is funny and fun! She talks so much! She loves all things Disney! So do we. We are so blessed to have each other.

Of course, today I remember her foster mother and social workers. For them it's been 2 years since they've seen her. They are all great people. I hope they are well. The floods in Thailand have displaced all but one foster family so we are quite certain Ms. Phen was affected.

We also remember her birthmother today and every day. Because she made a plan for adoption, we are able to be Mia's parents.

Gotcha Day - 1 Year Anniversary

Then...
Now...
A year already? It feels like yesterday, and yet, hasn't she been here forever?

I remember Gotcha Day so clearly.

It was very emotional for her. She said good-bye to her foster mom and social workers.

It was the day we received a cd full of pictures we didn't know existed, including her birth mother and grandmother. I had prayed for these pictures.

It was the day we received an unexpected gift for Mia from her birth mother.

It was the day we received items from her foster home. Another answered prayer.

It was the day we received our little girl forever.

A brave, but scared, tiny girl with a smile that melted our hearts. I think if she had asked for the moon that day, we would have reached right up to the sky and pulled it down for her.

Today... A happy, go with the flow, very smart, independent, tiny girl whose beautiful smile will always melt our hearts. If she asked for the moon today...well, we do have a little bit of willpower now. She adores her brothers and visa versa. She loves her Daddy to pieces and well, she thinks I'm pretty great too. She's our little girl and we love her tons!

Adoption stuff - she's completely on track developmentally for her age. She had no attachment issues at all. She grieved the loss of her foster mom for a while but each day seemed better than the previous. She isn't old enough to ask adoption questions. She'll be 2 years old next week. We love, love, love our agency - Holt International and the Thailand team of social workers. They were amazing!

I Loved You Before...

A year ago, I held Mia for the first time. During those first moments, I held back my emotions as I acknowledged the reality of her emotions. She was scared. Here's the blog post from that day. But you might want to read today's post first. Today, I thought I would share my book with the blogger world.

A year and a half ago, I wrote a book for Mia. We were waiting for our referral and thinking about her so many times a day. I wanted her to know what I was feeling before I knew a single fact about her. I already loved her... unconditionally.

Here it is - my book - although, it's SO much better with all the pictures. ;-)

I Loved You Before...
For Mia - Our Thai Princess
Written by your Mom while I waited to find out who you were.

I loved you before I knew your name,

before I saw your face

and before I heard your cry.

I loved you before I felt your touch,

before I smelled your hair

and before I kissed your head.

I loved you before you cried in my arms,

before you held my hand

and before you smiled at me.

I loved you before you laughed out loud,

before you hugged me

and before you kissed me.

While you waited a world away,

I loved you with all my heart.

So far apart

So long the wait

Together now

Together forever

I loved you before you knew me.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to get my book published. But last month I discovered Pint Size Productions, a website that prints board books. I uploaded pictures, my book and now have this fabulous board book that Mia will always have. I may never be a best selling author but I have my book "published" with Mia's photos in it. It's great. I highly recommend this site for board book creations. Some quality is lost in production, but it's still pretty good. Check it out if your kiddos still tear pages.

December, How I Love Thee!

Every year when the calendar flips to December, I immediately flashback to when I was preparing for my oldest kiddo.

I wake up and tell Matt funny stories of me being pregnant and go figure, he was already very active. He moved like a crazy person ready to bust out, and then, well, he did bust his way out almost a month early. Thankfully, the little guy was healthy.

This December I also flashback to last December when we brought Mia home. So, in case you care to relive it with me. This will be an annual flashback too.

I am so grateful for a complete family. Sure, Mia was with us last Christmas but to say Christmas 2009 was a blur, would be a severe understatement. We were operating on pure adrenalin, but so extremely happy to be altogether.

December is also Mia's birthday. Granted I wasn't there when she was born and didn't know she was being born, but we were always thinking of her. I think about her birthmother and the decisions she faced. Someday Mia will have a lot of questions and we will only have a handful of answers. I don't dwell on that fact, but I know it is inevitable. How ironic is it that I find this book today as I'm thinking about Thailand, Mia and her birthmother - Motherbridge of Love. Beautifully illustrated by Josee Masse - the text was donated anonymously to Mother Bridge of Love. This book is a great first step to explain the journey of a birthmother, a child and a mother. It's been a long time since I choked up reading a book, but this one did it. "The first one gave you life; the second taught you to live it." That's the point in the book that got me. This book is perfect. It's available at Amazon.

Petition to Adopt

Chris and I signed our petition to adopt Mia today. YAY!!!

It's pretty cool to see "Mia" on a document. It's yet to appear on any, I mean, ANY piece of paper through the entire adoption process - only her birth name. The petition is pretty great - Chris, Terri, Mia, birth name all in one notarized document! Finally. Another box checked off, another step complete.

Mia is amazing! I get asked, "How is she doing?" with "the look" so often. You know "the look" if you've adopted. Everyone asks - People who have asked before, total strangers who stop me at a ballgame but have an adoption connection themselves, relatives, friends, co-workers, seems everyone is waiting on a story. You don't get one here. Well, you do - but it's a good one.

She is very well attached to family members and close friends, loves preschool, loves playgrounds, loves the phone, loves to hear herself say something new, loves to show off a new skill. She's so easy going. She loves Matt, Mark, Mommy and Daddy to pieces. Chris and I watch her sleep instead of sleeping ourselves. Her brothers must kiss her goodnight, are excited to see her after school, etc. It's all good! All sounds like very "normal" stuff, huh? Yep - it is.

Is it what I thought? Definitely not! I never imagined life this good.

All My Eggs In One Basket

When I was about 9 years old, I went to overnight camp with 10 $1 bills for the snack shack. My mom instructed me to always "hide"my money in different places so I packed $2 in 5 different spots in my gym bag "in case I get robbed". To this day - I don't travel with all my money in one spot. And inevitably, I'm never quite sure where I put it or whether I'll find it at some random point in life or never... Quite possibly, I spent it and didn't realize it.

So you know it makes me VERY uncomfortable to take my priceless original adoption documents outside my house. And you can imagine when I carried them into the office to copy (attorney gets original paperwork and copies of ids) - original social security card, original resident card, original passport, original visa, all the original adoption papers that give us permission to be her parents... in one envelope... I was sick with fear of getting mugged. Well, I didn't get mugged and quickly separated her ids half in my purse and half in an envelope to walk out of the office feeling much better about this decision.

This attorney specializes in adoption and realizes the importance of every item. But... Looking at her desk, I wasn't convinced I would ever see those precious papers again. I know - I need therapy... The first step is admitting it, right?

Monday we will sign the Petition to Adopt Mia and our court date to finalize the adoption should be within the next month or so assuming we have no hangups. When you finalize an adoption, it sounds as if the process is complete, but we still have a few steps after that.

Of course, every adoption "step" comes with a fee... sigh... You can imagine my excitement when my husband called me to let me know he "found" money in his wallet. 2 Ben Franklins from the Thailand trip 9 Months ago. (We know that because we never have Bens). It does make me wonder where else we might have hid money... LOL

Drink the wine! Eat the brownies!

Nothing is better than Daddy's kisses

My spot is the 6 inches to the left of Mark, Mia and Mario...

Leaving the pig tails in! YAY! Little M - you are so pretty!

1st Day of Preschool - She was a little worried but had lots of fun! Adoption note - So happy to report we haven't had any attachment setbacks as a result of school.

I gotta go back, back, back to school again
You won't find me, till the clock strikes three
I'm gonna be there till then
I gotta go back, back, back to school again...
Whoa whoa, I gotta go....Back to School....AGAIN!
Oh How I LOVE GREASE!

At World Fest - we ate Thai, American & Fair food - What a yummy night!

We look tired - Might have something to do with 6 inches of bed space, but it's safe to say that football is kicking our butts and we aren't on the field. Between the 2 boys, their teams have a game or practice 6 days a week so we are rarely home. I find it hard to believe I don't have a single football picture. Video, yes, but not one picture. Sigh... We are about halfway through the season. I don't wish it to hurry by. I love it, exhausting, as it is. I keep saying this is the test of 3 kids, but actually, this is the life with 3 kids - Living la vida loca! It's great!

A month of highs and a week of lows.
  • We celebrated receiving our Consent to Adopt Mia paperwork from Thailand - we can now finalize our adoption in the US - WOOHOO!!!
  • We celebrated with my niece who just got engaged
  • We celebrated Matt's touchdown
  • I had a fabulous, too short, solo trip to California where I caught up with my SIL, BIL and nephew, had coffee with Cali friends getting ready to travel to meet their beautiful son in Thailand, danced the night away at my cousin's wedding at a gorgeous vineyard in SoCal, spent the wee hours at a casino with my Cali family laughing and winning back the money I lost on my 10 minute Vegas layover, slept in an amazingly, huge, fluffy bed with 8 pillows for 3 whole hours LOL (gorgeous villas at South Coast Winery and Resort - you must go if you're ever in SoCal)
  • I finished a book (only my 2nd in 9 months unless you count board books...)
  • We toasted a friend finishing 9 months of chemo with an excellent prognosis.

Yet, this week I struggle with my younger cousin and my aunt receiving news that cancer will take their bodies. My cousin found out too late for treatment and my aunt will lose her long battle. I'm not "close" per se to this part of my family, but they are still my cousins, who I romped with for years growing up so it's tough. Ironically, we are blessed to live in a city with excellent hospitals, doctors and cancer centers. But sometimes, having the best is only reassurance that there are no other treatment options.

So tonight we pause to remember September 11, 2001. We drink the wine and eat the brownies to finish off our favorite Thai meal. Although we are changed, the sun will rise tomorrow and there will be football.

A Year Ago I Saw Your Face

For so long - I had a mental image of you that was blurred out - there were no details - only small Thai girl, 0-4 years old. But a year ago, I memorized every feature in 5 pictures.

What an exciting day. I remember it all like it happened this morning. I was sitting on the bleachers at Matt’s championship baseball game, the players were being announced, Mark was not feeling well and sitting in my lap when the phone rang, Oregon area code, my blood ran cold, I was shaking, I could barely hear as I scurried away from the field telling Marissa to hold on one moment, telling Mark everything was ok, telling Marissa no, I didn’t want to call her back, I just need to walk away so I can hear, no, I can take the call right now, I want to take the call right now. Chris was in the dugout. There was no time to drag him out. I couldn’t risk Matt hearing anything and not being focused on his game. Marissa said, “Yeah, I think you probably want to hear what I have to say.” As I walked away, I was already tearing up - I knew what today was. It was referral day. I had done all the math, all the analysis, the board meeting was last Wednesday so the files would arrive on Monday and be assigned. They would call Monday or Tuesday. It was Monday evening. Please Lord let our referral be in there. How many times had I asked Him? For a moment I had gotten caught up in baseball and actually forgot about waiting for the call. I was living. Of course, the call wouldn’t come when I was staring at my phone. Life never happens that way.

Yes - a year later - it’s fresh in my mind - all of it. Marissa said, “We received a possible referral for you today.” She told me you were born on 12.22.08 and I quickly did the math and knew I heard it wrong. How did we get such a young baby? I asked her if she said 2008, she said, “Yes.” I asked, “She’s 6 months old today?” and as she confirmed yes, my math was right, I cried harder. We wanted as young as possible but never dreamed we would be so lucky, so blessed. Why us? I had never heard of a referral that young from Thailand. She told me you were healthy, beautiful & living in a foster home. She told me what you were wearing in each picture. At some point she said, “Oh I can’t believe you have to wait until you get home to see the pictures!” and I had told her I would be able to check the email at the ballpark. I didn’t have any pen/paper and was trying desperately to remember everything she said verbatim because I had to tell Chris. She told me your name. My eyes grew wide and I laughed, and then she told me your last name. I laughed again, and said, “Oh, you weren’t finished!” She repeated the name for me several times - pausing at syllables. I finally got it. Your beautiful name was bigger than you.

By this time I had somewhat composed myself, and then she told me your story. Well, there went the composure. As happy as I was for us, my heart ached. I hung on every word. I could barely speak. We talked about your story, your history and I was thankful that we had any information to pass along to you. I know some parents aren’t that fortunate. Then Marissa said, “I just sent you an email with information in it and pictures. Do you have any questions?” I said, “I can’t think - Oh yes, when will we travel?” She laughed (I guess everyone asks that) and said, “5-7 months”. I froze thinking you could be home before your birthday and before Christmas...I said I couldn’t think of anything else. She said, “Well, call me if you think of anything, but let’s hang up so you can look at the pictures!”

That email took so long to load.

The first picture was M at 5 weeks. What a tiny little girl. You were just perfect. Your hair was SO long. Of course, I was still crying. At this point, Mark really wondered what was up with this phone call so I said, “Do you want to see Mia’s picture?” He was super excited and said, “aaaaah, she’s so cute”. Yes - that would be everyone’s comment. I opened the 2nd picture at 3 months old and was blown away. You couldn’t be any more beautiful. We received 5 pictures in all but only 3 would open at the game.

I had to show Chris the pictures and tell him all about you while our team played the field because I didn’t want Matt to be distracted. Mark asked Nana & Papa if they wanted to see a picture of Mia the minute they arrived at the game. They were both so shocked & excited and thought you were just beautiful too. We sent out a big announcement email and posted it all to the blog & the Holt forum and everyone agreed, You are so cute!

I must have looked at those pictures 100 times during the game. But as the game started coming to an end, my mind shifted back to baseball. Our team was down, last inning, 2 outs, one runner on base, Matt was up to bat. I thought about how upset Matt would be if he didn’t get a hit. I gave my mom a look of doubt and she said, “This isn’t looking good.” I said, “No, it’s not, unless Matt hits it out of the park.” Of course, no one will ever forget what happened next - Matt hit it out of the park - a walk-off home run to win the tournament! That only happens in the movies. Much later after we all fully celebrated Matt's big moment - I showed him your picture and he was thrilled saying, “Is that picture really her?” and then adding, “She’s so cute!”

Now - you have been home for 6 months, you are doing great, life is busy and we are enjoying every minute of it! I couldn’t be happier chasing you around, picking up all your pink toys & clothes. Pink! It’s so natural now to look at dresses, pink shoes, bows, toys...Amazing how much my life changed in 12 months.

One of Those Moments

I checked on Mia napping in her crib one day and was taken back. She was cuddled up to the pillow from her foster home. Her foster mom made this pillow and gave it to Mia to bring home with us. I wonder if the pillow's scent took her back to Thailand. I wish I could have read her mind. I'll never know what she was thinking, but one thing is certain, the items we brought home with her are priceless.

Mother's Day

Yes, I'm still a historical reporter...

Mother's Day should be one of the most celebrated days of the year. Obviously, we think of our own Moms and Grandmothers, but this year I was able to add a birth mother and foster mom to the mix of thoughts. And of course, celebrate ME!!! LOL

My mom taught me the importance of a clean house (especially when Grandma brings her white gloves over). I can usually say mine is clean with a touch of scattered stuff. I'm trying to rid my life of stuff, but hey, there's only so much time in the day and I do value sleep much more than she did I think. I will be happy when mail becomes obsolete.

She taught me to smile. I remember her relentless will to make me smile and stand up straight as a teen. We always smile! Standing up straight - eh - I'm still trying.

My mom was also at every, I mean, EVERY ballgame or important "thing" in my life. (so was my dad but it's not Father's Day)... And I will say I played A LOT of games. Year round and nearly every night. She's now teaching me about being a super grandparent.

She is now retracting her teaching on a clean house by telling me to just enjoy my life, happiness, health, and kids. They grow up too fast - you can clean later. I wish she'd learned that before she made me clean every Saturday morning but, at least, my kids get to benefit from her new found knowledge. I have been known to lock the guest bathroom on busy weeks too! Another thing I learned from her...

We love to vacation together. 2 peas in a pod - all we need is a beach and an umbrella drink. We can just sit and watch people all day. Then, laugh about them all week.

So much more but not enough time to write it all down.

I LOVE YOU MOM!!! You're the best!

We did not plant a tree, flower or garden for our Thai Moms this year. We show Mia her foster mom's picture every day (it's on the frig) and she calls her May. We say, "Hi May. Hi Baby Bai Tong, Baby Mia. Awe, what a pretty girl. Love you May." She definitely enjoys this moment - it does not make her sad. This year was one of our innocent years with Mia (might be the only one) where she can just be happy with life so we just celebrated it without bringing extra attention to what she cannot comprehend. She has no memory of her birth mother. She still remembers May so we want to attempt to preserve that memory. I don't know if that is possible but if nothing else, she will know the story we tell of May. And what a story that is - this woman is completely amazing. That story will have to be a separate post. Of course, we will also tell her the story of her birth mother - an incredible person & story as well. We love them both and keep them in our thoughts and hearts each day. We plan to celebrate both Thai mothers with Mia.

4 Month Update and More

A little catch-all blog for late April!

My nephew Zachary made his First Communion in late April. I've actually never seen him more excited and proud of anything in his life than receiving the body and blood of Jesus Christ - pretty cool! Chris and I were so excited and proud of him. He looked especially dashing in his tuxedo and little brother Jackson was pretty darn handsome as well! I love them both so much!

We've been home 4 months now - cannot believe it - the 4 month home visit with our social worker went great. We have one more at 6 months and then some paperwork in the U.S. We might be the luckiest people in the world to adopt a child SO easy going. No More Bottle! She loves SHOES and CLOTHES!!! Oh dear... When she gets a new pair, she stomps around in them saying, "Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!" and laughing. She has done wonderful at all the ballgames and believe me, there are a bunch of them!!! She also beat boxes which we all think is hilarious - that's what a couple of tween brothers will do to a princess!

Hello March!

This could be one of my favorite pics. Notice her bare Thai feet! Love em!

We had our first post placement visit this week. One down, two to go. 2, 4 and 6 months.

It went fine. I cleaned from top to bottom of course. I know it's not necessary but a clean, orderly home does give a better impression... The SW was very pleased to see how she is bonding with us. For those wondering about "that bottle" and "those sleeping arrangements". She suggested to keep with what we were doing for 2 more months. So while I will continue to offer a cup, she will get a bed time bottle and a bottle with water overnight as a pacifier and about 5 bottles per day of whole milk. She will continue to sleep in our bed a while longer. Some people cringe but it's ok. We are sleeping, just waking up at least 5 times a night for a few minutes. But interrupted sleep is causing us to look and feel old and tired! I think we did before, but now we really do! LOL I predict we will all be sleeping through the night in our own beds in 4 more months. We shall see!

Mia can say quite a bit and she understands what "No!" means and sometimes, she listens when I say it! LOL But I can see her thinking, with her little one sided grin and eyes, she said No! but I really want to do it.

Baseball (Matt) has started and although temps are barely above freezing, it's great to see kids throwing a baseball and swinging a bat. A sign of spring! I love little league!

Soccer (Mark) is right around the corner so this will be the true test of having 3 kids - 2 into sports and 1 who is just into everything!

Mia's Slideshow

We have been home for 2 months today. It seems like Mia has been here forever. Life is great!

The music is Swept Away by Geoff Moore. I've listened to this song more than a thousand times while thinking of our girl and praying for her health and safety.

Holt Thailand Adoption

Our agency Holt International is currently accepting applications for Thailand adoptions.

There was a huge influx of applicants when other countries' programs closed or timeframes lengthened 2 years ago. Due to the influx, they closed applications unless families had previously adopted from Thailand. They have now re-opened them.

I cannot say enough about this program, the employees of Holt & Holt Sahathai and of course, the amazing foster families.

If you have ever considered international adoption, now is the time to find out more.

One Month Home

We think she's so beautiful - inside and out!

We’ve been home for a month now - wow - I can hardly believe it!

Mia is doing great. She is completely comfortable with all of us. She initially was more crazy about all the men but now is also crazy about all the women too. She loves her brothers so much it’s really cute and funny. They are equally goo goo over her. I am enjoying their interactions so much!

She started sleeping better about a month after we took custody so that’s about 3 weeks after we got home. She slept 5 1/2 hours straight one night and it was like aaaaaaaah that’s what life is supposed to feel like! I was all excited and the next night she was up 5-10 times. Oh well - Now it’s about 3-5 times a night but it doesn’t last long - only wakes us up, we pat her, hand her the empty bottle (serving as a pacifier) if she needs it and we all go back to sleep.

She is sleeping in our bed. For me that was easier than getting up 5-10 times a night and trying to get her to lay back down in a crib which is across the house. We have debated our options but for now, this is not bothering us and is enabling us to sleep better. Sleep is my friend and everyone in the house agrees that Mom should not be tired. It’s also making her feel secure. She has started taking naps in her crib so we’ll eventually try the nights. She slept in a crib at the foster mom’s house so many people think we are crazy for not putting her directly in her crib at home. Not that I feel like I have to explain our actions, but I do it for future adoptive parents in case they are curious about our decision. Picture a child who screams at the top of her lungs when her new parents lay her down anywhere. Her world had just been shaken up completely. She is scared and needs to feel like she’s not alone. Making her feel more secure everyday is our goal. Initially, she slept on top of us. Then, we were able to lay her next to us after she was asleep for half hour or so while we prayed she wouldn’t wake up. She also “checks on us” several times a night by reaching over and touching us to make sure we are still there. She has come so far. We are able to lay her down with a bottle and she falls asleep on her own although sometimes it’s fun to just hold her until she falls asleep. It’s funny to think about what we can do now that we never would have done in the first couple weeks because we have earned her trust.

She is still taking a bottle 5-6 times a day but no middle of the night bottle. It’s whole milk not formula. I switched bottles to Born Free before we got home. She was taking a 4 oz bottle and still wanted more when she finished it. We brought enough formula to transition her after about a week. (For those of you traveling that was 3 boxes and Holt gave us one box. Keep in mind we traveled for a week after our Visa day.) She loves pizza, chicken, fruit and will pretty much try everything but will gladly give it back if she’s not interested. We are still giving her rice and noodles. It’s hit or miss. She does not like eating the same thing often. Darn it... because I’m not much on variety...

Mia is walking very well. She has no fear at all in fact, will practically run after the boys. She is also into every thing. Kitchen cabinets are her favorite. She has her own drawer but she wants all of them. I think she knows what No means - she just doesn’t care.

We also celebrated my mom and dad’s birthday this month. They do so much for us and It was great to host the dinner because I felt “like myself” again. Some days I just feel like the bottle maker/diaper changer which is ok too. I love this little girl so much and am enjoying being her mom.

So it’s the pictures you were really wanting though -

She loves her Daddy! Check out her favorite shoes - snappy!

Oh there you are - you are SO busted!!!

Such a happy girl - both of us!

They were pretty excited about the bags! They haven't even looked inside.

Have You Been Here Forever?

M is such a great great great baby! I can't even believe it. She has adjusted so well to us. The other day I asked her, "Have you been here forever?" She has been in our hearts forever - That much - we know.

It is very cool to see her amazement when we go anywhere new. I remember her fear of the shopping mall on Day 2 of meeting her. She was petrified, confused and certainly not enjoying the experience - She didn't cry but we knew she was so nervous. Shopping doesn't make her nervous anymore. The baby who wouldn't touch ANYTHING in the store is now grabbing garb off the racks and picking out shoes. Oh Boy! I have a girl who loves to shop! Lord help us - well, mainly, Lord help Chris - but we are gonna have some fun! I took her to the mall yesterday - no stroller - I actually bought it on the way thinking I could whip it out of the box but it had to be assembled. Anyway - we went to 3 stores. She was grabbing shoes like there was no tomorrow at Journey for Kids - too funny. She had an entire conversation with the lady at Children's Place - it was too funny - she probably said, "Mom got an email that pink cords were 4.99 so we had to scoot over here to grab a pair." As we were leaving the mall, she was trucking out in her uberly cute pink boots and a lady said, "She looks like she's got this shopping thing down." I thought it was pretty good for the first USA mall visit.

I also can't believe we left for Thailand a month ago. Wow - what an amazing experience. I just remember how one minute (well 22 months really) we were watching everyone else travel and celebrating with them and living vicariously through them and then we blink and have a month worth of pictures and it's like she's always been here. If I had known that, I would have stressed less.

Everyone wants to know how M is sleeping. She is definitely doing better - I'm not sure why but she is waking up off and on all night. She is crying out, sitting up, rolling around etc. Not sure if she dreaming or what. She doesn't wake up for long but it has to be affecting her quality of sleep (and ours). This is an improvement over the time change issue we had with our AM parties without a doubt. Anyone else have this?

For those who are wondering - she slept in a crib in her foster mom's bedroom. Her foster mom would rock her to sleep and then put her in her crib. We started out rocking her to sleep and then laying down with her. For naps, we don't have to lay with her - she just lays on our bed with a bottle. At bedtime, we normally lay down with her. With all the night-time crying, we're not really willing to put her in her crib which is on the other side of our house. We definitely would get less sleep if we had to get out of bed to get her back to sleep all night long. I really have no idea how many times a night she is getting up - it is a lot - but fortunately, I don't wake up enough to check the clock or count every time just enough to get her back to sleep. So yes - we ruined her good sleeping habits! LOL

This week brought the UofL UK basketball showdown. We lost the game but our cheerleader was SO cute we didn't really care. I can't believe she left the sunglasses on but she actually loved them. Too funny - she is such a show boat!

We also scored our first kisses - First the sock monkey, then the dog (Mario - not the stuffed dog), then me and then Dad. How funny is it that she kisses the dog before her parents. Hey - she knew us 2 weeks longer than the dog...

Her favorite show off thing is definitely to say Aaaaaaah after anyone takes a drink. She just looks at the Starbucks cup and says Aaaaaah. So cute. This week she started talking more - She' says Bite, Bye Bye and waves, Mommy, Papa, Nana, Hi and Bye while holding her hand to her ear when the phone rings, she loves music, along with the never ending DADADADADADADA! She loves her DADA!

She also says SHEW when we walk outside. It's about 90ish degrees all the time in Thailand. So this 10-20 degree stuff we are having right now is all new to her. She laughed at the snow - about 4-5 inches. Have to wonder what she's thinking. She only stayed out for about 15 minutes but I had to land some pictures with her and the snow - of course, I'm praying we won't see snow again this year. She doesn't look like she extremely happy in the pictures but she was curious about it. She would touch it and play with it. I have to comment on the boys here - Matt LOVED the snow and Mark HATED the snow- he would say No Snow No Snow over and over. Now they both love sledding.

No I did not coordinate the pants with the gloves, but it's cute!

They are hard at work - earning that next video game!

Week One at Home

We've been home a week now and have enjoyed a whirlwind of visitors! We only "allowed" the visitors because Mia was adjusting so well to us. There's more on that below.

Look Who's Walking! Monday she stood up and walked like a pro - well - a wobbly pro!

Uh - Matt do you think that's fair?

That's more like it!

The inflatable bath tub is the best invention in the last 9 years! Sidebar - I can't believe Mark is turning 9 soon!) I thought it was a complete waste of money when I bought it. A fellow blogger bought it and loved it but I stand corrected. No falling over like those bath seats from last decade, no slipping, just lots of fun splashing! We used this immediately when we got home and it was the first bath that she didn't scream and she has not cried since! Highly recommend buying one and taking it to Thailand if you haven't gone. I concluded there wasn't enough room in my suitcase so I guess what I'm saying is I would have made room if I had known.

Saturday was back to life as we know it plus toddler - Matt had a basketball game at 2pm so we had to set an alarm to make sure we wouldn't oversleep. One thing with Mia's AM parties is that they normally end at 5AM and then we sleep like it's nighttime until noon-ish which obviously is why we aren't getting back on schedule. So not complaining about the amount of sleep just which hours we are doing the sleeping. Mia did fine at the ball game - the whistles and buzzers did not scare her which is a relief since we do this a lot. Actually, Matt ended up playing a pick up game after his game so we were there for a couple hours. She ended up taking her nap and was great.

Sadly, Chris had to go back to work on Monday. Mia was very out of her element all day. She woke up looked at his pillow and screamed the WHO STOLE MY DADDY?!!! scream. It took me a while to figure out what the deal was because this was definitely a new scream. Nothing I could do except put the bottle in her mouth, rock her and say Daddy will be right back. It didn't last too long but she was not herself Monday. Matt had another game and again, no problem with the loud buzzers. Mia was ecstatic to see Chris walk in the door from work. (So was I - no really, the kids were good, but I like having him around all day).

Tuesday I awoke to more Who Stole My Daddy? screaming and immediately grabbed the bottle and rocked. Matt had another basketball game, plus Mia had her doctor checkup. Chris met us at the doctor. He said she looks great and gave her 3 immunizations. They did not repeat any vaccines which is great news.

Wednesday brought the Who Stole My Daddy? whimper - much better. I was so thrilled to not have any basketball games or practices. No offense Coach, but man we are tired, need to unpack, open the mail and pay some bills! I can't even think about taking down Christmas decorations although it's killing me. A friend asked me what I needed, bottles, diapers, clothes, toys? and I said time to get organized - it's driving me crazy to have stacks of mail, filled suitcases, dirty laundry, etc. She was sweet to offer to come play with Mia so I could get organized. I may take her up on that eventually, Mia was cranky today from the shots but a little Tylenol did the trick.

She decided to bless us with sleeping during the AM hours by this week. I was thrilled beyond measure to sleep from midnight-ish to morning waking only for 2 bottles. I can deal with waking up for bottles but I was never very good at all-nighters - not even in my college days when I was supposed to be good at it.

Lots of visitors kept us busy this week. It was great to see everyone and share Mia with them. Everyone thinks she is adorable and of course, we couldn't agree more. She has been great with them. She definitely prefers men to women. Most of the male visitors were able to hold her but she has not warmed up to the female visitors as much. We know her well enough now to realize when she's getting nervous or uncomfortable so we can avoid crying. Fortunately, everyone has been great even if they don't get to hold her during the visit. I don't give parental advice very often so I won't but I will say that after 11 years of parenting, 3 children and dozen or so parenting/adoption books, we have learned to say, "It's not a good idea" and not worry about hurt feelings. We're all grown up now! LOL So far, I haven't lost anyone and aside from the airport and Christmas - we limited the visitors to one new set of new people at a time.

This week we taught her to say Aaaah after taking a drink. She also says MMM-MA when we kiss her but she doesn’t initiate kisses or MMM-MA when we kiss her on the lips. She only makes the sound when we kiss her cheek. She will initiate hugs though. And She says Yum Yum Yum if she likes the food. She prefers Asian fare to American but will try anything once. If it’s too cold (ice cream), she squints her eyes and if it’s too warm, she shakes her head No. Too cute!

She also loves music so we have lots of “dance parties”! No lullaby music - she’s jamming to Top 40. I just didn’t find any baby cds yet - well actually, there IS this one that I plan to buy but it's still in production. I'll blog about it when it's ready and once I get permission. ;-)
